Rahu Kaal

Rahu Kaal Today

Rahu Kaal is a daily window of about 90 minutes ruled by Rahu. Traditionally, new ventures, purchases and journeys are not started in it. The exact time changes with your city's sunrise and sunset.

Calculating for your city…

How Rahu Kaal is calculated

The time from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. Rahu rules a fixed part on each weekday, so Rahu Kaal moves through the day across the week. Because daylight length changes through the year and from city to city, Rahu Kaal in Delhi is not the same as in Chennai or London.

The table below shows which eighth Rahu rules and the textbook time for a day with sunrise at 6:00 AM and sunset at 6:00 PM. Use the live timing above for your city.

What to avoid during Rahu Kaal

  • Starting a new business, signing agreements or launching a project.
  • Buying property, a vehicle, gold or other valuables.
  • Beginning a journey, especially a long one.
  • Engagement, marriage rituals, griha pravesh and other auspicious ceremonies.

Work that is already under way can continue. Prayers to Durga or Rahu, and routine daily tasks, are not affected.

Yamaganda and Gulika Kaal

Yamaganda (ruled by Yama) and Gulika Kaal (ruled by Gulika, Saturn's son) are two more eighths of the day that are avoided for auspicious starts. Gulika is believed to make whatever begins in it repeat, so it is avoided for anything you would not want to recur, but some families use it for purchases they hope to repeat.
